The Medical Billing and Coding program, offered through the College’s Continuing Education & Workforce Development division, includes a 175-hour lecture component. Medical terminology, healthcare documentation, and billing and coding are all covered via synchronous learning through Zoom.

The eight-person cohort is currently working on their externship projects. Upon completion of the externship, students will sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders – CPC certification exam.

The Medical Billing and Coding field is one of the fastest-growing professions in the healthcare industry, according to Garrett College Program Coordinator Doug Beitzel.

"Being in the medical billing and coding field adds significant flexibility to employment opportunities, with many coders working from home," said Beitzel. "We wanted to create the same learning environment, so we offer this program via Zoom, allowing the student to attend in real time from home without the need to come to campus."

The next Medical Billing & Coding program cohort is scheduled to start in September and will be offered on Mondays and Thursdays from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Applications are currently open with scholarship money available to assist students.
